Faculty/Staff Spotlight: Vonda Easterling

Vonda M. Easterling was born and reared in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Easterling graduated from Scotland High School in 1989 and came to Saint Augustine’s College in January 1990. She became a member of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the spring of 1991. She graduated Cum Laude in 1995 with a degree in English. She later obtained her Master’s degree in English Literature at North Carolina State University. During her studies at NC State, she had the opportunity to study abroad in Ghana West Africa and Tanzania East Africa. She has done extensive research on the Tragic Mulatta as seen in Africa American and Southern Literature, as well as, the myth of the Strong Black Woman as depicted in African American and Southern Literature.

Easterling began her career in admissions and recruitment at Shaw University where she was able to develop and implement the first university open house and the first outreach program with the NC GEAR UP program. She worked at Shaw U from 1998-2004, and after obtaining her Master’s and graduating from NCSU, she began working for the College of Natural Resources at NCSU. There, she worked as the Director of Enrollment Management for the college for six years.

Prior to coming home to her Alma Mater, Easterling worked as the Senior Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, at North Carolina Central University.

Easterling enjoys traveling, reading, writing, and playing tennis. She has one five year old son, Jayden.
