This week, the HBCU Library Alliance and Harvard Library announced a project to sustain and deepen capacity for digitizing, discovering, and preserving African American history collections held in HBCU libraries and archives.

The HBCU Library Alliance and Harvard Library are embarking on this project to advance open, public access to archives and special collections pertaining to African American history. Funds are provided by the Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery initiative, which has designated $6 million for this project.

SAU’s Director of Library Services, Dr. Tiwanna Nevels, is the HBCU Library Alliance Board Chair. She shared additional context about the importance of the archives as the project’s focal point.
