Softball team hits a national home run

The Saint Augustine’s University softball team received its plaque on Tuesday, August 19 for having the highest batting average in the nation among NCAA Division II teams for the 2014 season.

“This is definitely an honor,” said SAU Head Softball Coach Nikki Bynum Bumpass, whose Lady Falcons were 2014 CIAA Tournament Runner-Ups. “My young ladies worked extremely hard this past season. I would like to thank my Assistant Coach Bruce Cozart for all his hard work and dedication to SAU and the ladies. Our motto is “Hard Work Will Produce Results.” We look forward to pursuing a championship this upcoming season.”

The Lady Falcons, who return nine players for the 2015 season, posted a .366 batting average. They also ranked among the top 10 Division II teams in three other categories, including scoring per game (4th), doubles per game (5th) and stolen bases per game (7th).

The Lady Falcons ranked 11th nationally in Division II in on base percentage and triples per game. They ranked 17th in slugging percentage.

Two Lady Falcons ranked among the top 10 nationally in Division II in their respective categories. Hannah Stutts (Sr./Statesville, NC) ranked fifth in least walks allowed per seven innings and Taylor Waters (Sr./Douglasville, GA) ranked eighth in triples per game and 10th in triples.

Daja White (Jr./Leland, NC) ranked 14th in batting average, 23rd in runs per game, 30th in stolen bases per game and 31st in toughest to strike out. Jo’Landa White (Sr./Leland, NC) ranked 22nd in runs batted in per game and Korey Hill (Soph./Virginia Beach, VA) ranked 28th in strikeouts per seven innings and 35th in toughest to strike out.
